The Wisconsin Streampulse sites are located just west of Madison, in southern Wisconsin. They are characterized by substantial nutrient and sediment loading.

Like most streams in the area, Black Earth Creek drains primarily agricultural land, with some suburban and forested influences. It has high nutrient and sediment loading which lead to abundant macrophyte growth. The study reach has little canopy cover. Being a tributary of Black Earth Creek, Brewery Creek has similar sediment and nutrient loading. It is much smaller, though prone to substantial floods.
